A Day in the (Un)Sustainable Life Research and Policy Project

We'd like to invite you to be a part of A Day in a (Un)Sustainable Life, an exciting research and policy project developed by University of St. Thomas marketing professor David Alexander taking place on November 15, 2009. This project studies differences in perceptions of sustainable consumption practices around the world by asking participants to wander into their community on November 15th to take photographs of the best and worst in sustainability where they live. As they compose those photographs, participants capture the thoughts and feelings they’re experiencing in a journal. When they’re done, participants share their thoughts and photographs with the project. The University of St. Thomas’ Net Impact chapter is taking a leadership role in carrying the project forward as an annual event that documents differences in sustainable consumption around the world and tracks changes in practices and perceptions over time.

A Day in a (Un)Sustainable Life offers the opportunity to be part of a research project that develops valuable new insights about the adoption of sustainable consumption in a multi-cultural, global environment that will influence policy makers around the world. To make the project a success, we ask that you invite your Net Impact chapter members and your local community to participate on November 15th. Participating is fun and easy and involves as much or as little time as one wishes. And you don’t need to be a professional photographer to make a major contribution to the project. We’ve attached a short PDF brochure that you can distribute with the invitations you send out. The brochure provides specific instructions to participants on how to capture their images, thoughts, and feelings and how to then share what they’ve captured with us via the photo-sharing website Flikr.com or email.

Thank you very much for helping make this project a success! Please do not hesitate to contact me (weir6254@stthomas.edu<mailto:weir6254@stthomas.edu>) or the project team (ADayInSustainability@yahoo.com<mailto:ADayInSustainability@yahoo.com>) if you have any questions.

Veronica N. Chapman
President/Founder
, Boxxout Enterprises
www.boxxout.org

As a child, Veronica Nicole Chapman’s parents impressed upon her “to whom much is given, much is required.” She knew she had a lot of work to do in following their lead and making her own mark on the world.

During her sophomore year at Spelman College Veronica founded a chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (S.I.F.E). This organization gave students the charge of creating and implementing innovative educational programs to teach their campus and surrounding communities the tenets of free enterprise. It was while president of Spelman’s S.I.F.E team that Veronica discovered she had an ability and passion for helping children through the development of engaging and informative educational programs; and after losing a cousin to gun violence, her calling became clearer.

Upon graduating from Spelman College she self-published The Advent of Planet Martyr: An Innovative Social Commentary, a book where she uses prose and poetry to address social issues. Included in the book is Ancestors Inc., a play Veronica wrote as a vehicle to educate Black American youth about their ancestors and how many of their ancestors used entrepreneurship to improve not only their lives, but also the lives of others.

Since graduating from Babson College’s F.W. Olin School of Business in May, 2008, Veronica has been building her organization, Boxxout Enterprises—using out-of-the-box thinking to create and implement innovative educational programs that teach 21st Century Skills to youth residing in urban, low-income communities.

Panel - The State of Sustainable and Responsible Investing

Hello all,

Next Tuesday the Boston Professional chapter of Net Impact will be hosting a panel discussion on Sustainable and Responsible Investing in the current market. It sounds like an interesting topic with great panel members. Please see details and panelist bios below.

Date: Tuesday, April 7th 2009
Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm
Location: Smith Barney offices at 53 State Street (39th floor), Boston

Please RSVP to devonslong@gmail.com

"After eight months of turbulent markets, the need for sustainable and responsible investing (SRI) has never been more urgent. SRI is built on the three legs of portfolio screening, community investment, and shareholder advocacy.
Portfolio screening allows investors to track SRI issues, including poor corporate governance and lack of transparency, which have both had a direct impact on the financial crisis. Responsible community investment has offered individuals with less than perfect credit the opportunity to prosper, while the irresponsible approach of predatory lending targeted the same subprime borrowers and brought the global credit markets to a standstill. Finally, shareholder advocacy and engagement plays an increasingly valuable role in influencing corporate behavior. This strategy pushes companies to respond to the threat of climate change, even as regulatory policy lags behind.

Please join our panelists as they lend insight into the state of SRI industry through a discussion on the growing market appetite for social screening, the long-term planning failures of corporate governance, and shareholder advocacy on climate change.

Peter Kinder, President, KLD Research & Analytics
Kinder has served as President of KLD Research & Analytics, which he co-founded in 1988. KLD’s mission is to remove the barriers to socially responsible investing (SRI) by providing institutional investors with research, compliance services, benchmarks, performance analytics, and consulting. Kinder has co-authored three books on social investing and written dozens of articles for publication on four continents. Kinder received a degree in History from Princeton University and a J.D. from Ohio State University.

Rob Thomas, President, Social(K)
Thomas is the president of Springfield, MA-based Social(k), the most diverse socially responsible retirement investment platform in the U.S. Thomas created Social(k) in 2005 to offer socially conscious investors the same breadth and depth of investment options available in conventional retirement programs. The platform offers more than 150 screened socially responsible funds and more than 2000 conventional funds to choose from and has been welcomed by the socially responsible community. Social(k) was a finalist for the SRI in the Rockies’ 2007 SRI Service Award and Co-op America’s Green Business Leadership Award in both 2007 and 2008. Rob Thomas is a third generation resident of Longmeadow, MA.

Rob Berridge, Program Manager, Investor Programs, Ceres
Berridge is Program Manager in the investor team at Ceres, where he assists investors and companies in addressing the risks and opportunities posed by climate change. Berridge helps coordinate various projects of the Investor Network on Climate Risk. Prior to Ceres, Berridge served as a board member and Vice President of Green Century Capital Management and as a staff member of US EPA's Green Lights and Energy Star Programs. He has also worked in commercial lending, as an environmental consultant, and for various recycling organizations. Berridge has a degree in Environmental Studies from Brown University and a Masters in Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University."
